This beautiful island is nestled 14 miles off the coast of Normandy in France, just a short flight or ferry ride away. This is the island retreat that’s waiting to be discovered to reinvigorate your mind, body and soul.

What makes Jersey sustainable?

From patchworks of purple wildflowers that grow on its dramatic headlands to the windswept dunes and wild wetlands teeming with birdlife that nestle on its northern cliffs, or in the cleanest beaches in Europe surrounded by local waters where you find archipelagos of desert islets and bottle-nosed dolphins playing in your wake, Jersey is conscious of the impact tourism can have on both its natural environment and communities. That’s why Jersey takes stewardship and protection of the island’s natural beauty and ecosystems so seriously.

As a destination, Jersey is constantly looking to develop ways for all to live sustainably and in harmony with the island’s environment. Jersey has gone so far as to set an ambition to be a carbon-neutral island by the year 2030, to help preserve the natural beauty of not only the island’s natural landscapes and wildlife but also the wider world we all live in. Discover ways for the eco-conscious traveller to enjoy a tranquil island break whilst leaving their holiday footprint a little lighter.

How to Get There: Fast / Slow

Jersey is just a short flight from over 20 UK and European airports, or a ferry ride from Poole (a 4 hour journey) or Portsmouth (a 9/10 hour journey).

Jersey's currency is sterling, but the island has its own money, the Jersey pound. It’s one of the last few places you’ll see a pound note, and while the notes may look different, the value is the same.

Tipping Etiquette

In line with other areas in the UK, tipping 10% is customary at restaurants, hotels and when paying for a taxi.

Sustainable highlights in Jersey

  • Sip sustainably

Alcohol free or ‘make-mine-a-double’, it wouldn’t be a proper holiday without a tipple or two. And it tastes even better when it’s guilt free. Make a pilgrimage to the Channel Island Liquor Company, located in a converted sail loft overlooking an old harbour, famed for its small but potent batches of premium hand-crafted gin and rum. This conscious boozy brand uses zero plastic and donates a percentage of its profits to beach cleaning.

Another enticing option is local favourite Stinky Bay Brewery, founded by two surfy hop-heads who do their best to make sure nothing goes to waste. Once they are done with the grain it goes to local dairy farms to feed our famed Jersey cows and the hops are upcycled as fertiliser to grow delicious local veggies.

  • Sail or kayak

When you explore the coastline with Jersey Kayak Adventures, you’ll bag a generous discount if you use greener transport alternatives to reach the beach.

Discover Jersey’s precious offshore reefs with Jersey Seafaris on an archipelago adventure. Every litre of fuel used on their boats is offset towards Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust’s ‘Rewild Carbon project’ that protects the natural habitats of endangered species.

  • Stay somewhere green

Suppose you’re searching for a local holiday stay that takes sustainability to heart. In that case, the Seymour Hotel Group has been recognised with a ‘Green Award’ for their commitment to eco-friendly travel and you’ll find menus bursting with tasty local produce that travelled less than a few food miles to your plate. Or, for luxury with a conscience, Longueville Manor has a ‘New Leaf’ sustainability programme that’s dedicated to protecting the environment and developing sustainable practices such as their ‘Garbage Guzzler’ refuse solution.

The Atlantic Hotel is another enticing option for those seeking a wonderful sustainable stay. This 4* hotel on the West Coast of the island, is one of only 12 hotels in the UK to be awarded the prestigious Earth Check’s Silver Status.

  • Explore La Mare Wine Estate

La Mare Wine Estate is perfect for those seeking a sophisticated, but sustainable day out. This prestigious winery offers a variety of tours including private wine tastings, and also has an option to explore the vineyard unguided.

La Mare Wine Estate is certified as a Green Tourism Gold standard attraction due to its efforts to protect the environment and operate sustainably. Certification is assessed across 20 fields including waste management, energy efficiency, and biodiversity.

  • Recycle that bucket and spade

Jersey’s beaches are some of the cleanest in Europe, but we all know the strain our oceans are under from plastics and other waste. Earn some good karma by filling a bucket with plastic and rubbish for a free hot drink as a reward for your efforts at a number of beach outlets. You can sip on something rewarding at Rhona’s in the harbourside village of Gorey or Kismet Cabana tucked away in beautiful Ouaisné bay.

  • Explore sustainably with responsible transport options

If you want to get out and explore sustainably in Jersey, there are a variety of great options available. Consider buying a 1, 3 or 7 day Liberty Bus pass which will allow you to use hop and hop off bus services during the duration of your stay. E-bikes are another great option. Bikes can be hired from Evolution Cycles which both cater to a wide range of options, including bikes suited for trekking and those which have luggage compartments. Evolution Cycles is based in St Helier.

Lakeys is another fantastic option for those seeking to explore on an e-bike, with a variety of weekly tours led by the husband and wife duo, Andy and Lucy. Tours run for 4 hours and will allow you to explore the stunning scenery of Jersey’s West Coast, along with key attractions including Corbiere Lighthouse, Beauport Bay, and Waterworks Valley.

Here you can explore sustainably with a variety of walking and hiking routes across the park, along with a number of exciting activities to get involved with along the coastline – from kayaking, paddleboarding, and scuba diving.

3 Day Jersey Itinerary

  • Day 1: Explore the east

    OVERVIEW

Spend your first day exploring the east of the island. Pick up a selection of local produce and head out by bike or bus to explore Mont Orgueil Castle and Jersey Zoo before venturing down to Bonne Nuit Bay, a little gem tucked away on the north coast.

    PICK UP A PICNIC

Your first stop of the morning is the Central and Beresford Street Markets where traders will greet you with their local wares and colourful stalls. Fill your basket with tasty treats for a picnic to enjoy later in the day and breathe in the irresistible smell of freshly baked bread and brewing coffee, what better way to start the day?

    MONT ORGUEIL CASTLE

We’re heading east so either grab an Evie bike and pedal your way on the island’s lanes or hop on the number one bus that will take you on the scenic coast road to the relaxed fishing village of Gorey. Wander the pier with its pastel-coloured cottages, alfresco restaurants, quaint cafés and local shops. Grab a coffee before making your way up to Mont Orgueil Castle which has been standing guard over the village for more than 800 years. Ascend to the towering heights of the castle taking in breathtaking views of the French coast before descending into the network of staircases, towers, secret rooms and sinister dungeons. Learn the story of the castle spanning hundreds of years, uncovering gruesome tales and hidden treasures.

    A WILD LUNCH

It’s time to eat so get back in the saddle and cycle up to Jersey Zoo. If you’re taking the bus, the number 13 will take you along lush green lanes to your destination. Spread out your picnic blanket amidst the Zoo’s lush green gardens and tuck into the feast of local produce you procured this morning. After filling your bellies, walk off lunch and discover some of the world’s rarest animals that call Jersey Zoo home.

    DINNER IN A BAY

End your day at Bonne Nuit Bay, a hidden gem nestled in the north coast where you can dine on some of the island’s best Thai food. Just a 20-minute bike ride from the Zoo, you’ll fly down the hill to this charming bay. If you’re taking the bus, jump on the number four which departs from Trinity Church, the stop is a 20-minute walk from the zoo. Just make sure to check the timetable when planning your day as this bus doesn’t run throughout the day. Soak up the scenery, take a dip in the sea if that’s your vibe and dig into a banquet of Thai food as the sun sinks below the horizon at this local hotspot.

  • Day 2: A full day tour

    OVERVIEW

When you’re only on the island for a short time, what better way to make sure you don’t miss a thing, than by letting someone else take the wheel and show you the sights? A full-day bus tour is just the ticket.

START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON

Head out of your hotel for Liberation Square where you’ll meet your bus. Make a pit stop at Cargo Coffee Bar for your essential coffee and croissant before hitting the road. Most of the companies offer hotel pickups if you’d prefer.

    HOP ON BOARD

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to full-day bus tours, but they’ll all take you for a spin to experience Jersey’s top spots. Hop on board with Bay Tours, Waverley, Tantivy or Jersey Bus Tours for a full-on day of island exploration. You’ll arrive back in St. Helier at around 17.00 in time to freshen up at your hotel before heading out to dinner.

    SUNSET SUPPER

Take front-row seats for sunset at El Tico Beach Cantina at the heart of St. Ouen’s Bay. Savour a local craft beer or two and tuck into a menu full of fresh Jersey seafood and produce as the waves roll in and the sinking sun puts on the greatest show on earth.

  • Day 3: Occupation stories and capital adventures

    OVERVIEW

On your last day in Jersey, experience the island’s wartime story, wander the lanes of St. Helier and top it all off with a plate of genuine Jersey fish and chips.

    THE JERSEY WAR TUNNELS

Delve deep into the island’s past at the Jersey War Tunnels and uncover stories of what it was like to live here through the Occupation during WW2. If you’re up for the challenge, why not take on one of the escape room experiences? Can you find the clues, crack the code and find the keys to freedom?

The number 28 bus will take you from St. Helier to the War Tunnels.

    EXPLORE THE ISLAND’S CAPITAL

After your heroic escape at the War Tunnels, make your way back to the island’s capital, St. Helier and spend the afternoon exploring the lanes of the bustling market town. Seek out boutiques where you’ll find local treasures to take home, set off on the St. Helier art trail to find colourful pieces splashed on urban corners or simply sit back and enjoy a spot of people watching in one of the many cafés dotted around the town.

    A VERY BRIT…(ISH) DINNER

Dinner on your last day is a reason to splash out. Take a seat for some top-notch fish and chips at The Lookout Beach Café and enjoy the view of Elizabeth Castle. The mouth-watering menu is choc-a-bloc with seafood so you can fill up on the authentic taste of Jersey before you set sail at the end of your trip. But remember, it’s not ‘goodbye’, it’s ‘au revoir’.
